I participated on a panel about linguistic profiling for the Housing Rights Center's annual summit, held at the Los Angeles Times headquarters. Also participating were a socio-linguist, an employment attorney and a professor of American Studies. The panel discussion focussed on people who are discriminated against based on assumptions made about their race based on the sound of their voice. More information on HRC is at http://www.hrc-la.org
On June 3rd and 4th, I'll teach several workshops in Louisiana on learning the neutral or regionless American accent. These will be held in the Shreveport area, and may expand to Baton Rouge or New Orleans if demand is sufficient. Concetta Tomei was cast in an Argentinian role in Lincoln Center Theatre's upcoming production of The Clean House after we spent several phone sessions together prepping the role. She flies to New York City in August to start rehearsals, before which, we'll work through the whole script together. Concetta said, "Thanks for your unbelievable skill in helping me to understand this dialect!"
